Milton deserves better than this. Orgel and Goldberg boast that they have produced a radical Milton, but all they really offer is rehashed Alastair Fowler, without Fowler's erudition or eloquence. Many of the notes are just plain ignorant. There are better editions out there.

 "Good edition, bad binding" 1999-04-14

This is an excellent edition of John Milton's works; it includes all the major works (Paradise Lost, Paradise Regained, and Samson Agonistes) and several of his sonnets, other poems, and prose tracts. The notes are thourough, although they are arranged at the back rather than footnoted. This cleans up the body of the text, but also requires constant flipping of pages. And the pages do not hold together well. After a few weeks of use, mine were beginning to fall out! It is a good, affordable volume; but if you are planning a serious study, expect it to fall apart sooner or later.

Amazing though it is, the story of how Melody Gardot overcame the effects of a near-fatal accident to become one of the vocal sensations of 2008 is not the most extraordinary thing about the 23-year-old Philadelphia singer-songwriter. It is simply that here is a voice in a million; one that touches the soul.

Melody's debut album `Worrisome Heart' introduced, in The Sunday Times' words: "a remarkable talent by any measure", with songs of quiet, wistful poetry in arrangements that "ooze after-hours sophistication". Yet the follow-up, for release in April 2009, marks a substantial leap forward. `My One And Only Thrill' is an intensely creative milestone, transcending genre distinctions of jazz and blues to offer a haunting personal musical statement that will appeal to all music-lovers. As with her acclaimed live shows she captures and holds her audience in the palm of her hand.

These eleven songs, covering a wide range of emotions, are all her own except for an irresistible, Brazilian take on Somewhere Over The Rainbow. It would take a heart of stone to remain unmoved by the poignant title track My One And Only Thrill. And when the album is finished (as Irving Berlin wrote truly) the song is over, but the Melody lingers on . . .

"I Wish I Had Six Stars To Give!" 2009-09-26
By Terence Allen (Atlanta, GA USA)
"My One and Only Thrill" is one of the best jazz records ever. It definitely positions Melody Gardot as one the of the preiminent jazz artists of this or any generation.

The only cover on this record is "Over The Record," and even it seems fresh and reinvigorated, even though it is relentlessly covered by jazz musicians. But it is the other songs, all written by Gardot, showing a range of tenderness, bitterness, and unrestrained, unvarnished romanticism and guided by her beautiful, emotional voice, that set this record above all the rest. Songs like "Baby, I'm A Fool," "If The Stars Were Mine," "Our Love Is Easy," "The Rain," and every other cut on this record show an artist who can convey feelings and emotions with the greatest of recording artists.

My One and Only Thrill is an absolute must for any jazz music lover, and actually, a must for any music lover regardless of genre.

"One of my new favorite singers" 2009-09-22
By Danielle (Illinois)
I only just found out about Melody Gardot about a month. I came across her video for "Baby I'm a fool" one day on Youtube and I was truly blown away. I then bought this, her lastest cd, "My One and Only Thrill" and was impressed even further. Melody's voice is so smooth and so beautiful to listen to. I wished the cd would go on forever. Not only is her voice gorgeous but she also wrote or co-wrote all but one song on the album. Her song-writing abilities are fantastic and bring a lot of depth to the songs.

My favorite tracks:

-Baby I'm a fool

-If the Stars Were Mine

-Your Heart is as Black as Night

-Lover Undercover

-Our Love is Easy

-Les Etoiles

-The Rain

-My One and Only Thrill

-Deep Within the Corners of My Mind

I would definitely recommend this CD for anyone who has a love for the jazzier side of music. But you don't have to be a huge jazz fan to love this cd, I truly believe just about any music lover would enjoy hearing Melody Gardot sing.

 "Amazing new talent" 2009-08-26
By Mr. Retro (Chicago, IL. USA)
I'm not into female vocalists, at least not any current ones. I listened to Nora Jones and she was okay, but I just discovered Melody Gardot on Amazon and my life has changed. This is the most talented, sophisticated, soulful, melodious and inspiring singer I have heard since Edith Piaf. Melody has an intimate, yet breezy voice with nuance and style that has to be heard. I did not think I would ever hear a voice like this again in my life. I think I'm in love.

If you like jazz, New Orleans, a beautiful voice, a very tight band and orchestra, and just a very unique and sensuous and original talent, then this is the girl for you. Melody Gardot!!! Please make more recordings, fast!!!

I first heard of Melody on the local jazz station in Seattle and had to try out her cd. Bought this one and Worrisome Heart and haven't been this pleased with a music purchase in a long time. Melody is an amazing talent, writes her own songs and has an incredible voice and only in her 20's. An old soul in a young case. Can only imagine how she will progress, intend to follow her closely. Hope more cd's are on the way as its so nice to put the ones I have on and relax. Very soothing, no "in your face" here.

In Cromwell, award-winning biographer Antonia Fraser tells of one of England's most celebrated and controversial figures, often misunderstood and demonized as a puritanical zealot. Oliver Cromwell rose from humble beginnings to spearhead the rebellion against King Charles I, who was beheaded in 1649, and led his soldiers into the last battle against the Royalists and King Charles II at Worcester, ending the civil war in 1651. Fraser shows how England's prestige and prosperity grew under Cromwell, reversing the decline it had suffered since Queen Elizabeth I's death.

 "Beware the softcover edition." 2008-04-20
By R. Stout
This was a concise and thoroughly researched book on Oliver Cromwell. I have only one complaint - Antonia Fraser eludes to illustrations that are not present in the book. Either a cost cutting decision or gross incompetence on behalf of the publisher, it is a major distraction. If deciding to purchase this softcover edition, keep that fact in mind.

"Cromwell - a man of his time" 2008-04-16
By Robert Wallace
Fraser's book is best at trying to place Cromwell in his time. It is pointless to upbraid her for writing a book about someone who could be an unpleasant, violent and designing character - Europe was full of even more violent generals and religous fanatics at the time

By carefully following his career and the people around him she shows how he rose from mediocrity to high office AND was a brilliant general even though he started as at the age of 40

I thought it was well written and a good introduction to a complex character in a complex time

"Great soldier but terrible political leader" 2007-10-07
By Wandering Colorado Girl (Virginia)
Growing up an Irish Catholic American, I grew up hating Oliver Cromwell without really knowing why (an influence of my Irish grandmother). Fraser's biography of this brilliant and driven soldier is thoroughly researched and surprisingly sympathetic. She gives a great insight into what drove this man as well as giving a broad look at the political, cultural, and religious influences behind the brutal English Civil War. Cromwell was a brilliant general whose strategic and tactical genious beat the King's trained forces. His genius, unfortunately, did not extend to the political sphere. This is a great account of a flawed individual.

 "Nasty, Brutish, and Long" 2005-09-22
By rickm
Most of my review will echo the discontents expressed by my fellow reviewers, but I hope I can provide an original analysis. If you are deliberating on whether to read this book, do not delve into the lengthy journey without prior knowledge of Cromwell. A more terse and concise biography is more suitable for the beginner. Antonia Fraser knows this time period intimately, and she would probably be incapable to produce a more superficial work on such a massive figure in English history. Although there is a small amount of side information and exposition about the historical events surrounding Cromwell (e.g., The English Civil War), the reader gets the feeling that the author assumes that we know much of the pertinent information already. This causes the novice reader on Cromwell to tend to find herself lost during some of the key events in his life. With some prior knowledge of the time period, this confusion could be avoided.

Antonia Fraser is an erudite writer with stylistic flair, but is also painfully verbose. The sentences are often long and protracted, often with frequent use of the characteristic British punctuation, the semicolon. The result is a biography that is over a hundred pages too long. This is especially true when one considers that this biography is purely a narrative, and there is little writing that delves into the theoretical and political ideas that motivated Cromwell. This may be because Cromwell was motivated by fanatical and zealous devotion to his religion. When one is so enthralled by an unsubstantiated, uncouth dogma, there is little room to ponder questions when an inept but clear answer is to be found. Cromwell was not a theoretician, but a pragmatic man. This is interesting because most of his language and actions are littered with references to the metaphysical, however crude and obtuse those references and underlying thoughts are.

Fraser paints Cromwell as an avuncular, charming man whose religious ethics seeped into his daily actions. While this may be true when applied to his personal life, it is impossible to reconcile this image with the man who sanctioned and even performed atrocities during his invasion of Ireland. The motivation for Fraser's subtle attempt at vindicating Cromwell can only be speculated on, but perhaps she is so enamored with English history that it became nature for her to fall in love with one of its heroes. Whatever the motivation, the bias is there, and needs to be acknowledged.

For those that merely want to get a sense of who Cromwell was and the time period he lived in, a shorter biography will suffice. Try and pick one without the verbosity and slight sycophancy of Fraser.

"Detailed, pro-Cromwell, and a bit too long" 2004-01-18
By Mike Christie (Austin, TX USA)
Cromwell is perhaps the single most controversial figure in English history. Only John and Richard III have attracted as much venom as he has, and there are still people alive today who hate him -- see some of the other reviews here for at least one example. Naturally the truth is complicated, and Fraser lays out a good deal of detail in support of her case, which is that Cromwell was much maligned, and was on the whole a good and religious man trying hard to do what he thought was right.

I had no prior belief about Cromwell, but I have to say Fraser convinced me rather of the opposite -- that he was a religious fanatic, brilliant but limited, who was neither a great ruler nor personally very admirable. Her apologies for some of his worst sins, such as the terrible events in Ireland, are outlandish.

On the plus side, this is a thorough and detailed book, with enough information to allow a reader to make up their own mind. Fraser does at least keep the facts separate from her opinions. The book is excellent on Cromwell himself; it's pretty good on details of the Civil Wars, though it doesn't go to the level that an exclusively military history might. However, it's surprisingly weak on the overall political background. To truly understand Cromwell you need to know what came before and after. I would have liked to see more about the religious state of the country, and why it got that way, and also about the Revolution of only thirty years after his death. But in concentrating on Cromwell the man (at perhaps too great a length), Fraser has skimped on the surrounding politics.

Overall, I'd recommend this only if you're deeply interested in knowing a lot about Cromwell's life, or if you already know the political and religious framework of the years 1640-1660. If you know both, this is a fine book (allowing for Fraser's open bias) but it's no place to start.

One other note: the paperback edition (which is what I have) does not have any of the photographs or other plates that are apparently in the hardback -- Fraser makes occasional reference to "the plate opposite page 709" and so on, so I would bear that in mind in choosing between the two editions.

"A good concise study of Cromwell's life" 2008-12-11
By Mark Klobas (Tempe, AZ, USA)
There are few figures in English history as controversial as Oliver Cromwell. Born a member of the lower English gentry, he embraced Puritanism as a young man and won election to the "Long Parliament" in 1640. During the English Civil War he distinguished himself in military commands, and steadily rose to become second-in-command of the Parliamentary forces by the end of the conflict. Successful campaigns in Scotland and Ireland propelled him to the leadership of the English Republic. Though he refused the crown, he governed as Lord Protector until his death in 1658 created a vacuum that led to the restoration of the Stuart dynasty two years later.

Though Cromwell has been the subject of numerous biographies, John Morrill's book offers a concise assessment of Cromwell's life and legacy. Taken from the entry Morrill wrote on Cromwell for the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography Plus Index of Contributors (60 Volumes), it offers a good introduction to Cromwell's life by a leading scholar of the period. His section on Cromwell's ever-evolving reputation is particularly enlightening, offering his learned assessment of the many works on the Lord Protector. These qualities make this book a good starting point for anyone curious about Cromwell, as well as an excellent guide for further study of the man and his times.

"Refreshing - - - some fine, fine material indeed" 2006-02-08
By Daniel Dean (Maryland, USA)
Ditto the B.B. Smith review. I too fall into the same demographic and agree with his assessment of the music scene these days - at least for someone at my station in life. There's been precious little to inspire me musically of late, that is until I discovered two very important things: internet radio and chillout / downtempo / nu jazz grooves.

I was laying on the couch one morning, having taken the day off from work because I wasn't feeling well. I turned on the television and tuned in to one of those music channels that come bundled with the satellite TV service. As luck would have it, I just happened to land on the chillout station - a station I'd never listened to before. I was floored by what I heard. Nearly every single song pulled me in. I couldn't get enough. I forgot about being sick and spent the entire day laying there blissing out to this new musical experience. I was so bowled over by what I was hearing that I took an extra day off just to spend more time with this new discovery!

Two years later I have a chillout / downtempo collection that I am very proud of, and a list of chillout internet radio stations that I love and support. This Oliver Peoples disc fits quite nicely into that mold of anytime-anywhere listening. In fact, I'd say that pretty much anything on the Quango label is worth owning (I now have 6 or 7 of their releases). This release is a fine, fine sampling of chillout / downtempo music if you're just now getting into this genre (I know the CD jacket says electronica, but that's almost certainly a misnomer; this isn't electronica, nor is it ambient). Yes there are many fine collections out there (the Hed Kandi releases come immediately to mind), but you can't go wrong with this one if you building a downtempo collection, or wanting to add to an existing one.

Taking that sick day was one of the best things I've ever done.

 "Courtesy of KCRW" 2005-10-13
By B. B. Smith (Massachusetts)
Two years ago I never knew music like this existed. By the time I hit my mid-'50s, I figured that I had aged out of music. Oldies are depressing, rap/hip-hop isn't really my story, and rock and roll is...nowhere. Then I discovered I could listen to music on my computer; when I landed on KCRW, Santa Monica, I was instantly addicted. I am now a member--I live nowhere close to Santa Monica--and have a huge library of music KCRW introduced me to. This Oliver Peoples 4 disc was given lots of airtime; according to the classification system on Itunes, where I am playing it now, it's 'electronica'. International artists (Sebastien Tellier) prove that the US is behind the rest of the world musically, in some respects at least. Charles Webster's remix of Martina Topley-Bird's 'Soulfood' is music to dream to...I ended up purchasing Webster's CD on the strength of this stuff. Thievery Corporation's "Revolution Solution" is great...actually, it's all mesmerizing. The weirdest thing is that Oliver Peoples is a brand of sunglasses, which also, apparently, sponsors music compilations that are assembled by Quango records. Quango is coming out with a 2-disc compilation for Da-Nang, which makes the kind of ultra-cool cargo pants my daughter wants, if she could afford them. I can afford them, but I'm too old to wear them. Fortunately, I'm not too old to listen to it. Meanwhile I'm contemplating quitting my day job so I can listen to music all the time. Nice for a change.
