Amazing though it is, the story of how Melody Gardot overcame the effects of a near-fatal accident to become one of the vocal sensations of 2008 is not the most extraordinary thing about the 23-year-old Philadelphia singer-songwriter. It is simply that here is a voice in a million; one that touches the soul.
Melody's debut album `Worrisome Heart' introduced, in The Sunday Times' words: "a remarkable talent by any measure", with songs of quiet, wistful poetry in arrangements that "ooze after-hours sophistication". Yet the follow-up, for release in April 2009, marks a substantial leap forward. `My One And Only Thrill' is an intensely creative milestone, transcending genre distinctions of jazz and blues to offer a haunting personal musical statement that will appeal to all music-lovers. As with her acclaimed live shows she captures and holds her audience in the palm of her hand.
These eleven songs, covering a wide range of emotions, are all her own except for an irresistible, Brazilian take on Somewhere Over The Rainbow. It would take a heart of stone to remain unmoved by the poignant title track My One And Only Thrill. And when the album is finished (as Irving Berlin wrote truly) the song is over, but the Melody lingers on . . .

"My One and Only Thrill" is one of the best jazz records ever. It definitely positions Melody Gardot as one the of the preiminent jazz artists of this or any generation.
The only cover on this record is "Over The Record," and even it seems fresh and reinvigorated, even though it is relentlessly covered by jazz musicians. But it is the other songs, all written by Gardot, showing a range of tenderness, bitterness, and unrestrained, unvarnished romanticism and guided by her beautiful, emotional voice, that set this record above all the rest. Songs like "Baby, I'm A Fool," "If The Stars Were Mine," "Our Love Is Easy," "The Rain," and every other cut on this record show an artist who can convey feelings and emotions with the greatest of recording artists.
My One and Only Thrill is an absolute must for any jazz music lover, and actually, a must for any music lover regardless of genre.

I only just found out about Melody Gardot about a month. I came across her video for "Baby I'm a fool" one day on Youtube and I was truly blown away. I then bought this, her lastest cd, "My One and Only Thrill" and was impressed even further. Melody's voice is so smooth and so beautiful to listen to. I wished the cd would go on forever. Not only is her voice gorgeous but she also wrote or co-wrote all but one song on the album. Her song-writing abilities are fantastic and bring a lot of depth to the songs.
My favorite tracks:
-Baby I'm a fool
-If the Stars Were Mine
-Your Heart is as Black as Night
-Lover Undercover
-Our Love is Easy
-Les Etoiles
-The Rain
-My One and Only Thrill
-Deep Within the Corners of My Mind
I would definitely recommend this CD for anyone who has a love for the jazzier side of music. But you don't have to be a huge jazz fan to love this cd, I truly believe just about any music lover would enjoy hearing Melody Gardot sing.

I'm not into female vocalists, at least not any current ones. I listened to Nora Jones and she was okay, but I just discovered Melody Gardot on Amazon and my life has changed. This is the most talented, sophisticated, soulful, melodious and inspiring singer I have heard since Edith Piaf. Melody has an intimate, yet breezy voice with nuance and style that has to be heard. I did not think I would ever hear a voice like this again in my life. I think I'm in love.
If you like jazz, New Orleans, a beautiful voice, a very tight band and orchestra, and just a very unique and sensuous and original talent, then this is the girl for you. Melody Gardot!!! Please make more recordings, fast!!!

I first heard of Melody on the local jazz station in Seattle and had to try out her cd. Bought this one and Worrisome Heart and haven't been this pleased with a music purchase in a long time. Melody is an amazing talent, writes her own songs and has an incredible voice and only in her 20's. An old soul in a young case. Can only imagine how she will progress, intend to follow her closely. Hope more cd's are on the way as its so nice to put the ones I have on and relax. Very soothing, no "in your face" here.
